Toucan is an onchain carbon-credit market infrastructure project that builds digital rails for climate finance, enabling carbon credits to be tokenized, traded, and retired on public blockchains. Toucan's Twitter Score is 49 out of 1000 as of July 2026, ranking #21,116 (top 5%) among 531,432 tracked accounts.
Toucan was co-founded by Raphaël Haupt and James Farrell and initially ran on Polygon's proof-of-stake network, with its early Base Carbon Tonne pool representing a basket of tokenized carbon credits. According to its own figures, within two months of its October 2021 launch, its infrastructure facilitated the tokenization of 20 million carbon credits from more than 50 climate projects, generating roughly $2 billion in trading volume and nearly 300,000 tonnes of carbon-credit retirements. The project states that post-launch its infrastructure has supported $4 billion in total carbon credit trading volume and accounts for 85% of all digital carbon credits.
Toucan faced a significant setback in May 2022 when Verra, a leading carbon registry, announced it would prohibit the conversion of retired credits into crypto tokens. As TIME reported, this decision directly disrupted Toucan's core mechanism, caused sharp declines in its BCT token and KlimaDAO's token, and left uncertainty around 22 million retired credits already placed onchain, forcing Toucan and similar projects to revise their operating models. WIRED also reported criticism from carbon-market researchers that Toucan's bridging system could scale existing flawed carbon markets without resolving additionality and quality concerns, and that Toucan blocked wallet addresses after several hundred thousand tonnes of HFC-23 offset credits reached its bridge.
Toucan has continued to expand its infrastructure since then. In October 2023, it announced a two-way bridge integrating with the Puro Connect API to enable instant settlement of engineered carbon removal credits on Celo and Polygon. In March 2024, it launched CHAR, described as the first liquid market for biochar credits and an onchain carbon dioxide removal credit pool, debuting first on Celo and later on Base. In May 2025, Toucan announced it was transitioning to an open-source, community-driven project, while a separate venture called Cedar was launched to focus on AI agents and automated workflows for sustainability teams.
Toucan is affiliated with Celo, Puro.earth, Gold Standard, Neutral, the World Economic Forum, the World Bank, and IETA. It is backed by Shine Capital, Union Square Ventures, IDEO, Hypersphere, and Obvious. Toucan has published 3,849 posts and has been mentioned by 130 accounts a total of 418 times.
