The current BitShares blockchain was established in October 2015 by the BitShares 0.9 community and its block producers.
BitShares Community operates on a Delegated Proof of Stake consensus mechanism, in which holders of BTS, the platform's core utility token, vote on witnesses, committee members, and worker proposals that fund ongoing development. BitShares 2.0 was the first deployment of the Graphene blockchain technology developed by Cryptonomex. The genesis block of the current chain distributed over 2.4 billion BTS, with a maximum supply set at approximately 3.6 billion BTS. One of its flagship products, bitUSD, launched in July 2014 as a crypto-collateralized stablecoin but underwent an emergency global settlement in November 2018 after becoming under-collateralized and losing its dollar peg.
