Foundation is a defunct onchain digital art NFT marketplace that went offline in April 2026 and decided not to resume operations. Foundation's Twitter Score is 400 out of 1000 (an Excellent rating) as of July 2026, ranking #606 (top 0.5%) among 389,201 tracked accounts.
Foundation was founded by Kayvon Tehranian, who served as its CEO, and was operated by Foundation Labs, Inc., a technology company building software for creativity, culture, and commerce that operated from 2020 to 2026. Launched in 2021, the platform allowed artists, designers, and creatives to release and sell work as NFTs, and was recognized in a 2021 research paper as one of the prominent marketplaces dedicated to NFT auctions and trades. Foundation Labs also built Rodeo, a 2024 onchain social network where posts could be collected, which was sunset in 2026 after struggling to see further growth, and Aura, a 2025 experiment described as a prediction game for TV fanatics.
Foundation announced in February 2026 that the marketplace and brand had been sold to Blackdove Art, but per its April 27, 2026 official update, the transaction did not complete as expected and ownership returned to Foundation. The platform subsequently went offline and confirmed it would remain offline indefinitely. Because Foundation was built as a non-custodial, onchain system, user assets remain in wallets and smart contracts continue to exist onchain independent of the frontend. Foundation stated it will maintain its IPFS gateway through April 27, 2027 to give the community time to transition.
Foundation was previously backed by a16z, Variant, Designer Fund, Standard Crypto, and 1kx. Foundation has published 10,780 posts and has been mentioned by 738 accounts a total of 5,526 times. Foundation's portfolio includes Hubble Protocol.
