Helium was co-founded by Amir Haleem, Shawn Fanning, and Sean Carey. The community had previously approved IOT and MOBILE sub-network tokens in 2022, and in January 2025 HIP 138 returned HNT as the primary reward token across all sub-networks. Helium is affiliated with Nova Labs, the Helium Foundation, FreedomFi, and DISH Network.
Helium has attracted backing from Andreessen Horowitz, Multicoin Capital, Khosla Ventures, GV, FirstMark Capital, Tiger Global, Munich Re Ventures, and FTX Ventures. On January 17, 2025, the SEC filed a complaint against Nova Labs Inc. alleging unregistered securities sales related to Hotspots and allegedly misleading partnership claims; those claims are allegations, not established findings of guilt. On April 10, 2025, the SEC agreed to dismiss the unregistered securities claims, and Nova Labs agreed to a $200,000 no-admit/no-deny settlement tied to its Series D equity financing, according to the retrieved source.
