Nayib Bukele, known formally as Nayib Armando Bukele Ortez, is the President of El Salvador, working at the Presidency of the Republic of El Salvador. He founded Nuevas Ideas and is affiliated with Bitcoin and the National Bitcoin Office of El Salvador. Nayib Bukele's Twitter Score is 489 out of 1000 (an Excellent rating) as of July 2026.
Nayib Bukele led El Salvador to become the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender after the Bitcoin Law passed congress with 62 of 84 votes in June 2021, placing bitcoin alongside the U.S. dollar. The government launched the Chivo bitcoin wallet, preloaded with $30 for users registering with a Salvadoran national ID. The World Bank rejected El Salvador's request for help implementing bitcoin, citing environmental and transparency concerns. The state National Bitcoin Office later reported holdings of 6,049.18 BTC worth approximately $637.3 million as of early 2025, and Nayib Bukele announced plans to build Bitcoin City in La Union at the base of the Conchagua volcano, to be powered by geothermal energy for bitcoin mining.
Nayib Bukele reached a roughly $1.4 billion Extended Fund Facility agreement with the IMF in December 2024, requiring that bitcoin acceptance be voluntary in the private sector and that public-sector bitcoin-related activity be confined. On January 30, 2025, El Salvador's legislature removed bitcoin's status as official currency, made acceptance voluntary, and ended bitcoin tax payments under the terms of that agreement. El Pais reported allegations of corruption and failures in bitcoin implementation, including duplicate or falsified Chivo wallet users for the $30 bonus and a wallet flaw that allegedly permitted an $840,000 theft; these are reported allegations and no personal wrongdoing by Bukele has been established. Nayib Bukele has also registered a precandidacy for El Salvador's 2027 presidential election for a third term, enabled by constitutional reforms allowing indefinite reelection.
