Treegens was founded by Jimi Cohen, who set a Guinness World Record certified on 22 April 2024 by planting 30,469 mangrove trees in 24 hours at Shimoni, Kenya. The DAO's core infrastructure is a Proof of Tree protocol in which planters record before-and-after footage inside a dApp, an AI model counts the trees, and staked $TGN holders verify the methodology before rewards are minted. $TGN is the governance token deployed on Base, used for voting, verification staking, and rewards, and is tradeable on Uniswap and via the Relay cross-chain bridge, with staking available on Hydrex.

Treegens also issues $MGRO, a fungible mangrove eco-credit token where each unit represents one mangrove grown for at least three years, minted exclusively through the Proof of Tree process. Alongside these fungible tokens, the project deploys DSSTs, dynamic semi-soulbound NFT AI agents whose visuals level up in line with a holder's regenerative impact. Smart contracts have been audited by Protofire, and the codebase is open source.

Treegens leads the 1B Tree GROWalition campaign, which targets one billion trees planted in a single day on 26 July 2026 and is backed by sitting environment ministers and more than twelve governments. The project has been voted first place in three Gitcoin rounds among hundreds of scalable climate solutions and has received multiple Gitcoin grants across several rounds. Treegens also co-founded Treegens of Naija in partnership with Greenpill Nigeria to advance mangrove restoration in Nigeria, and maintains affiliations with Giveth and General Magic, among other ecosystem partners.
