World is a proof-of-humanity, digital identity and crypto financial network that was co-founded by Sam Altman, Alex Blania, and Max Novendstern and rebranded from Worldcoin to its current name in October 2024. World was co-founded with the stated aim of establishing a new standard of trust for the internet through private proof-of-human verification, digital identity, and financial infrastructure. The project is developed in association with Tools for Humanity and is stewarded at the protocol level by the World Foundation, with further affiliated entities including World Assets Ltd. and World Chain LLC. The October 2024 rebrand also introduced an updated Orb device, the biometric hardware used to verify users' iris patterns.
World has faced regulatory scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions. Kenya's Ministry of the Interior suspended enrollment on August 2, 2023, citing security, financial services, and data protection concerns. Spain's AEPD issued a precautionary measure in March 2024 prohibiting activity in Spain for up to three months following complaints, and the project subsequently made a legally binding commitment not to resume iris scanning in Spain until the end of 2024 or until Bavaria's BayLDA decided on the legality of its practices. BayLDA ultimately ordered the deletion of biometric iris codes it had stored, concluding the project infringed personal data protection rules; the project stated it had voluntarily deleted the data months earlier.
