Wormhole is a cross-chain interoperability platform and messaging protocol that describes itself as the leading interoperability platform connecting traditional finance and the internet economy. The protocol first launched in 2020 and introduced a token bridge between Solana and Ethereum in Era1, later launching more broadly in August 2021 after being built by developers within Jump Crypto. Wormhole's TwitterScore is 400 out of 1000.
Wormhole is affiliated with the Wormhole Foundation and Wormhole Labs, and was previously affiliated with Jump Crypto, which incubated the protocol for years. The W token is the native token that powers the Wormhole platform, with a max supply of 10,000,000,000 and an initial circulating supply of 1,800,000,000. W launched as a natively multichain token and, as of an April 3, 2025 blog post, was delegated and staked in governance across Ethereum, Base, Solana, Arbitrum, and Optimism. Stake for governance went live for W token holders on June 6, 2024 via the Tally Governance Portal, and Wormhole said the Wormhole DAO would be the first to adopt MultiGov. Wormhole uses a Guardian network of 19 distributed nodes, with VAAs produced as standard 13-of-19 multisignature attestations. The platform reports 1B+ messages sent, 200+ applications built using messaging, 6 runtimes supported, and 30+ blockchains supported, with all-time transfer volume of $58,946,586,582 and all-time messaging volume of 1,094,108,376.
Fortune reported that Wormhole raised $225 million at a $2.5 billion valuation on November 29, 2023, with no lead investor and participants including Brevan Howard, Coinbase Ventures, Multicoin Capital, ParaFi, Dialectic, Borderless Capital, Arrington Capital, and Jump Trading. The investors' stake consisted entirely of token warrants rather than company equity. The November 2023 capital injection and formation of Wormhole Labs finalized Wormhole's split from Jump Crypto, with Dan Reecer stating Wormhole was completely separated from Jump.
Wormhole says institutional integrations include Securitize, BlackRock, and Apollo. Securitize selected Wormhole as its exclusive interoperability provider for current and future tokenized funds, BlackRock's BUIDL fund selected Wormhole for interoperability across blockchains, and Apollo selected Wormhole for the Apollo Diversified Credit Securitize Fund multichain expansion. Google Cloud joined Wormhole's Guardian Network as a validator node, Flow Traders became a solver for Wormhole Settlement, and AMD partnered with Wormhole on zero-knowledge proof acceleration. The Wormhole Foundation says Borderless Capital launched a $50 million Cross-Chain Ecosystem Fund to support Web3 applications building with Wormhole technologies. The Wormhole Foundation also says Wormhole was rated the #1 cross-chain messaging protocol in a Uniswap Bridge Assessment Committee security report, and that its Immunefi bug bounty offers up to $2.5 million for significant security contributions.
Attackers exploited Wormhole in February 2022 and made off with $320 million in cryptocurrencies from a bridge between Solana and Ethereum. After the exploit, Jump Crypto immediately stepped in to backfill the lost funds.
