FTX is a bankrupt former cryptocurrency exchange whose collapse in November 2022 triggered one of the largest fraud cases in crypto history. FTX's Twitter Score is 426 out of 1000 (an Excellent rating) as of July 2026, ranking #534 (top 0.5%) among 389,201 tracked accounts.
FTX was co-founded by Sam Bankman-Fried and Gary Wang. The exchange's native token was FTT, and reporting on Alameda Research's FTT-heavy balance sheet helped trigger a withdrawal run that led to FTX filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on November 11, 2022. Bankman-Fried resigned as CEO at that time, and John J. Ray III became CEO to oversee the bankruptcy proceedings.
FTX previously had affiliations with Alameda Research, its U.S. affiliate FTX.US, and FTX Ventures. Prior to the collapse, FTX had been backed by investors including Paradigm, Sequoia Capital, SoftBank, Temasek, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, Tiger Global, Coinbase Ventures, Multicoin Capital, and VanEck.
FTX now operates primarily as a bankruptcy communications account. The SEC filed a civil complaint alleging that Bankman-Fried orchestrated a scheme to defraud equity investors in FTX Trading Ltd. Bankman-Fried was subsequently convicted on seven charges of fraud and conspiracy and sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. Gary Wang, co-founder of FTX, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and securities fraud charges and testified in Bankman-Fried's criminal trial. In August 2024, a U.S. court ordered FTX to pay more than $12.7 billion to compensate customers and fraud victims. FTX's reorganization plan became effective on January 3, 2025, with first distributions to creditors expected within 60 days of that date.
