Wired reported in April 2022 that MiamiCoin had no utility inside Miami, with users unable to pay taxes, buy a bus ticket, or rent a flat with it.
Francis X. Suarez also supported plans by FTX to move its U.S. operation to Miami. After FTX filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on November 11, 2022, and Sam Bankman-Fried resigned as CEO, Francis X. Suarez acknowledged that his earlier support had not matured well. Axios reported in June 2023 that, as mayor, he had limited executive authority under Miami's city-manager system and also worked concurrently as an attorney and private equity executive, previously at DaGrosa Capital Partners.
