Bitstamp by Robinhood is a global cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2011 and based in Luxembourg. The exchange was founded by Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak, and is now affiliated with Robinhood Markets, Inc., which closed its acquisition of Bitstamp Ltd. on June 2, 2025. In January 2015, Bitstamp suspended service after a security breach in which less than 19,000 bitcoins were stolen; the exchange said only its operational wallet was compromised and that it held enough offline reserves to cover the compromised bitcoins. In April 2016, Bitstamp received a Luxembourg payment-institution license that allowed it to operate across all 28 EU countries at that time. Bitstamp later temporarily suspended its Ethereum staking service due to regulatory concerns.
