COPA is a non-profit patent alliance that works to remove patents and litigation as barriers to cryptocurrency innovation, operating a shared pledge among members to make their crypto-technology patents freely available for defensive use only. COPA's Twitter Score is 41 out of 1000 as of July 2026, ranking #29,692 (top 10%) among 464,440 tracked accounts.
COPA was formed to encourage the adoption and advancement of cryptocurrency technologies by having members commit not to assert their crypto patents against others except in self-defense. Backers of the alliance include Block, Coinbase, MicroStrategy, BtcTurk, Chaincode Labs, Black Star Investments, and the Human Rights Foundation, alongside individual backer John Pfeffer. General members of the alliance include Kraken, Blockstream, Chia Network, OKcoin, Protocol Labs, Stacks, Uniswap, Worldcoin, BitPay, and SatoshiLabs.
COPA is perhaps best known for its landmark legal case against Craig Wright. On March 14, 2024, Justice Mellor ruled in COPA v Wright that Craig Wright is not the author of the Bitcoin White Paper, did not operate as Satoshi Nakamoto from 2008 to 2011, did not create the Bitcoin system, and did not author the initial Bitcoin software. The written judgment was released on May 20, 2024, with COPA stating that the ruling confirmed Wright's Satoshi claims were false and that developers could continue work on Bitcoin without fear of litigation from Wright. In October 2024, COPA and Unified Patents jointly launched the Blockchain Zone, an initiative to challenge patents held by non-practicing entities that could threaten the open-source blockchain ecosystem.
